Dr. Horst Mahr became "Doctor Honoris Causa" of BAS

hon DSC 0054At a ceremony held in the Great Hall of BAS on Tuesday, 17 March 2015, Dr. Horst Mahr from Germany was awarded the honorary title "Doctor Honoris Causa" by the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Acad. Stefan Vodenicharov. The event was attended by the leadership of the Academy and by many academicians and corresponding members. While he was presenting Dr. Mahr, Acad. Vodenicharov said that he receives this highest honorary title for his achievements in the banking and financial sector and awarding him this title is a great honor for the Bulgarian academic community.

Horst Mahr has and MD in economics and political science and a PhD in political science. The topic of his dissertation is the Middle East. Especially popular among his books are "Baath Party, a portrait of the Pan-Arab movement" (1971) and "Egypt in the foreign policy of the United States and the Soviet Union after the Suez Crisis of 1956" (1994).

For many years Dr. Mahr hase been vice-chancellor of the University of Munich and has taught at universities in Germany, the Diplomatic Academy in Moscow and Vienna, the Diplomatic Institute in Sofia and other universities.

Dr. Mahr has been international director of Bayerische Vereinsbank, Munich; Executive Vice President of Baden- Wuerttembergische (BW) Bank AG, Stuttgart; board member of the BW-Bank Ireland Plc, Dublin; board member of BW-Capital Markets Inc., New York and Director of BW Asia Ltd. Hong Kong.

hon DSC 0064 Currently Dr. Mahr is chairman of the German Association of Foreign Policy and the Banking Association for Central and Eastern Europe (BACEE); Vice President of the University of Munich; member of the Board of the International Institute for Ethnic Group Rights and Regionalism (INEREG), Munich; of the Academic Council of New Policy Forum (Gorbachev Forum); of the International Academy of Information, Moscow; of the Reform Club, London; Military and Navy Club, Washington; Rotary Club Grunwald.

After the ceremony, Dr. Mahr made a speech with and in-depth look dedicated to the latest developments and trends worldwide, analyzed from an economic perspective. Horst Mahr argued that the global structure of power in the world is undergoing changes in the era after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The European Union has become a key player on the world scene, the future of the continent and the world as a whole builds on today's economic realities and is influenced by dangerous challenges, such as euroscepticism and youth unemployment; the conquered by chaos regions; military revanchism and Islamic extremism.

In conclusion, Dr. Horst Mahr thanked BAS for this honor and said that for him the title "Doctor Honoris Causa" will be associated with the high responsibility to personally contribute to the achievement of lasting peace in Europe and the world.
