International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies - IYL 2015) was officially opened today, 20 January 2015, in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The President of BAS Acad. Stefan Vodenicharov, who is chairman of the National Organizing Committee, launched the international initiative in Bulgaria and noted that in recent years there has been significant progress in the development of science and technology associated with nanomaterials, which is beneficial to research directions related to various properties and manifestations of light.

In his speech Acad. Vodenicharov pointed out that the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which is a national research and knowledge center, assumes the role of the unifier of scientists and specialists in Bulgaria, working in the fields of science, education and technology related to the light; and to organize these events throughout the year knowing that success can only be achieved by unity of their efforts and harmony of their interests.

The International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies is held under the patronage of the President Rossen Plevneliev. In the newly formed National Organizing Committee chaired by Acad. Stefan Vodenicharov, participating members are representatives of scientific and educational circles, together with the Bulgarian lighting industry. The media partner is the National Publishing House for Education and Science "Az Buki".

During the official opening in BAS greetings were delivered on behalf of Mr. Rossen Plevneliev, the President of the Republic of Bulgaria; Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO; Prof. Georgi Mihov, Rector of the Technical University – Sofia; Corr. Member Hristo Beloev, Rector of the University of Russe; the Federation of Scientific Unions and others. Acad. Damyan Damyanov, Deputy Chairman of BAS, greeted the guests and participants in the initiative.

The idea for the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies and the overall program for its implementation in Bulgaria in 2015 was presented by Acad. Alexander Petrov. The national programme includes two sub-programmes- "Optics and the Science of Light in the Year of Light" and "Lighting Technologies and Applications". The upcoming events, which are included in the sub-programmes, are 36. Prof. Ivan Lalov and Prof. Hristo Vassilev presented the initiatives. During the opening Prof. Evgenia Vulcheva held a public lecture "Blue Light-Emitting Diodes: the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2014".

At the initiative of UNESCO and the United Nations 2015has been declared the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies - IYL 2015). This initiative aims at promoting on a global scale the latest scientific achievements in the field of light and their application through lighting technology to solve a huge part of the global challenges facing society today in the areas of energy, lighting, economy, education, health and others.
