BAS received a donation for the research project "The Thracians - Genesis and Development of the Ethnic Group, Cultural Identities, Civilizational Interactions and Heritage from Antiquity"

1016-1A donation to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to support the project "The Thracians - Genesis and Development of the Ethnic Group, Cultural Identities, Civilizational Interactions and Heritage from Antiquity" was made by Dr. Eng. Dobrin Ivanov. The contract for the donation of the sum of 200,000 leva was signed on 20 October 2016 in the office of the President of BAS Acad. Stefan Vodenicharov. This is the second major donation that is made to support the work on the project for the Thracians, after the one made by Mr. Peter Mandzhukov at the beginning of the year.

Dr. Eng. Dobrin Ivanov was a researcher at the Institute of Electronics - BAS, also owner of an investment company with professional development and experience in the field of high technologies, technology transfer, and marketing of high-tech products, machinery and equipment. "I am honored to be here and I am convinced that without what Bulgarian Science is doing, and without successive steps in the knowledge, that we would not have the present and the future, which our young generation has," said Dr. Eng. Dobrin Ivanov when receiving the diploma for donation at the Academy. The President of BAS Acad. Stefan Vodenicharov also presented him a diploma for his support of BAS research in Thracian heritage.

1003The project is the first inter-academic project that brings together 27 research units of BAS (22 institutes and 5 laboratories) with the participation of universities and research centers from Canada, Italy, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. For the first time the Thracian heritage is being investigated thoroughly and in a complex way. The focus of the research is to establish continuity in the gene pool through the use of the new opportunities that are provided by microbiology, molecular biology, paleobotany, paleobiology, genetics, organic and inorganic chemistry, archeology, astronomy and metal sciences, as well as new technological developments in field of the documentation of cultural heritage. DNA analysis is applied to the established authentic bone material.

0974In close cooperation with the humanities, and especially with thracology, art history and cultural anthropology, the results of the complex research will allow us to carry out a qualitative leap in our knowledge of the thracian ethnos and culture, in the same way as it has long been done for other ancient peoples.

The ceremony of the donation was attended by the Vice President of BAS Acad. Damyan Damyanov; Scientific Secretary General Prof. Evdokiya Pasheva; the Advisor to the President of BAS Corr. Member Svetlana Kuyumdzhieva; Prof. Valeria Fol from the Institute for Balkan Studies with Centre of Thracian Studies; Prof. Nikolay Spasov, Director of the National Museum of Natural History and Assoc.
